Anchorage—A cut in allowable US bunker sulfur levels to 1% for ocean carriers starting August 1 is likely to raise fuel costs by 20%-25%, market watchers said in recent interviews. Marine carriers are expected to either use 1% sulfur bunker fuel to meet the new standards or create a 1% sulfur blend of 3% bunker fuel and ULSD. Bunker fuel with 1% sulfur is currently valued $90-$100/mt above the 3% sulfur bunker fuel that is now used in most ports, according to suppliers and buyers.
