US oil rig count hits new high; gas rigs at 13-year low

Houston—The US oil rig count set anotherrecord high last week, climbing 16 to 1,421,Baker Hughes said in its weekly report. Mean-while, the natural gas rig count continued toplummet, falling by 21 to a 13-year low of 541.The last time so few gas rigs were operat-ing in the US was in August 1999, when theynumbered 531, Baker Hughes data showed.Overall, the US oil and natural gas rotaryrig count for last week fell by five to 1,966,which was up 84 from 1,882 in the sameweek of 2011.
