Turmoil in the market for renewable fuel credits hadn’t yet peaked, but Jarmin Kaltsas knew in January that he would have to diversify his boutique biodiesel plant in Portland, Maine, if he wanted to keep it alive. By then, the Environmental Protection Agency had exposed one seller of bogus renewable fuel credits, and traders’ talk of a wider crackdown was sending the market for renewable identification numbers (RINs) into a tailspin.
