Algae biofuel methods are considered unsustainable

Washington—Scaling up algae-based biofuel to 5% of US demand for transportation fuels would put unsustainable demands on energy, water and nutrients using current methods, the National Research Council said in a report published on October 24. But the authors—15 experts in science, industry and the environment—said the findings should not be read as a definitive barrier to future production. They said more research and development could lead to innovations that help realize the full potential of algal biofuels.
