US Navy says biofuels ban would harm energy security

Washington—The US Navy pushed back against Republican efforts to cut spending on military biofuels, in a letter to senators this week, ahead of scheduled debate on the Defense Department authorization bill in the Senate. Representative Michael Conaway, a Texas Republican, successfully attached an amendment to the House defense authorization bill, which passed May 18, to effectively ban the military from purchasing biofuels, except in “limited quantities” necessary for testing equipment. That provision is not in the Democratic controlled Senate’s version of the bill.
