Kuala Lumpur—Growing global sources of unconventional natural gas will underpin the world’s fast-rising dependence on the “clean” hydrocarbon fuel, but government regulations and public fears over new extraction methods threaten the pace of future development, the heads of Shell and ExxonMobil said June 5. Speaking at the World Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson said governments risk stifling investment in new gas developments and called for stable fiscal regimes that do not change with the ups and downs of commodity prices.
