Drilling off Alaska would impact whales: US NOAA

Washington—If oil and natural gas drilling happens offshore Alaska, companies should halt activity during whale migrations, avoid polar bear clusters and work around local fishing traditions, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said December 22. The draft environmental impact statement examined how oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas would interfere with the area’s wildlife, socioeconomics, air quality and scenery. NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service prepared it with help from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
