New York-US gasoline demand increased 4.1% on a year-ago basis in the survey week ended January 21, largely on weather quirks, as motorists pumped a total of 62.578 million barrels, MasterCard Advisors said January 25. "The main factor for the ‘noise' this time of year tends to be the timing of winter weather both this year and last year," said John Gamel, MasterCard Advisors analyst, in commentary accompanying the group's SpendingPulse weekly report. He did not elaborate further, though the survey week saw plunging temperatures across much of the US East Coast.
