EU approves ban on oil imports from Syria

London-The European Union September 2 banned the import of oil from Syria into EU countries but gave oil companies an "adjustment period" until mid-November for existing contracts. The embargo does not ban investment by European companies in Syria's energy sector but such a measure could be agreed in the future as part of the EU's continuing efforts to punish the Syrian government for its violent repression of anti-government protests.
