Alberta shuts in 691 gas wells to aid bitumen recovery

Vancouver—The Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board has ordered 46,000 Mcf/d of natural gas production to be shut in at 691 wells in the Canadian province’s oil sands region, putting an end to a dispute that has stretched over the past eight years. In a final decision, the energy regulator said December 13 the affected gas wells present a “significant risk” to the in-situ recovery of bitumen deposits in the Athabasca oil sands region, 60 miles north of Fort McMurray.
