Shell wins key permit for Alaska offshore drill plan

Washington-Shell on July 1 won a critical federal air quality permit for its 2012 Alaska drilling program, which includes exploratory wells in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.The US Environmental Protection Agency issued a draft Air Quality Permit covering the drillship Discoverer, which Shell has leased from Noble to conduct operations in the Arctic Outer Continental Shelf. Public comment on the permit will be taken for 30 days and a hearing held in Barrow, Alaska on August 5. The permit period begins July 6 and ends August 6.
