Cape Town-Unrest in Nigeria's Niger Delta may thwart President Goodluck Jonathan's ambition to win this year's election and bring the oil industry to a standstill. A year after thousands of fighters laid down their arms under a government amnesty program, militants have resumed attacks on oil infrastructure and hostage-taking. In November 2010 alone the main militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), struck an ExxonMobil offshore platform, UK-listed Afren's shallow- water oil field and a pipeline supplying crude to two refineries. And December saw more attacks on pipelines, forcing companies to shut production.
