Houston-Deepwater and ultra-deepwater rig availability remains tight, to the point that some operators appear to be mulling their "second-best" options in a global market long on discoveries, a veteran drilling representative said October 5. As the highest-end segments of the rig fleet are contracted and availability becomes more strapped, operators look for the "next most capable" rig available that can do the work they need, Jeff Chastain, vice president of investor relations at contract driller Noble Corporation, said during a presentation to the Johnson Rice Energy Conference in New Orleans.
