Washington-The US House Energy and Commerce Committee September 21 approved pipeline safety legislation after making changes that could strengthen rules for pipes buried under rivers. The panel also relaxed a strict damage prevention provision to exempt some farming and other activities from requirements to call notification centers before digging. The committee voted unanimously to send its version of pipeline legislation (H.R. 2937) to the full House for consideration, where it will be merged with another bill (H.R. 2845) recently approved by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The bill in the Senate (S. 275) has been placed on the legislative calendar.
