Tanker ban urged off British Columbia coast

Vancouver-Plans by Enbridge and Kinder Morgan to ship large volumes of oil sands crude from Canada to Asia developed a politi- cal flashpoint December 7 when the Canadian Parliament passed a motion pressuring the government to formally ban oil tanker traffic in British Columbia northern waters. The 143-138 non-binding vote had full backing from the three opposition parties- Liberal, Bloc Quebecois and New Democratic Party-but was opposed by the Conservative minority administration of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which is not required to act on the motion.
