Newfield makes deepwater oil discovery at Axe prospect

Houston-In a rarely heard statement since the Gulf of Mexico deepwater drilling moratorium began in May, big independent Newfield Exploration July 21 announced an oil discovery in the Gulf’s deep waters. The well, called Axe, was spudded April 10 offshore Alabama, prior to the start of a sixmonth US moratorium which began May 30. Axe is in 5,800 feet of water, according to records from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEM). It was drilled with the Diamond Ocean Confidence, previously leased to Murphy Oil.
