Singapore-The Philippine Bureau of Customs has slapped a Pesos 24.5 billion ($567 million) smuggling charge against the local division of Shell, saying in a statement October 14 that the Anglo-Dutch major intentionally misclassified and misdeclared petroleum imports to evade tax payments. The company is being criminally sued for giving misleading information on oil imports between August 2005 and May 2009 to avoid payment of correct excise and value-added taxes, Customs Commissioner Angelito Alvarez said.
