Salazar proposes Offshore Energy Safety Institute

Washington-Interior Secretary Ken Salazar November 2 proposed the formation of an off- shore drilling safety institute that would coor- dinate the spending of private and federal dol- lars on research, training, standards and oil spill response. The new "Offshore Energy Safety Insti- tute" would fund research into blowout pre- vention technologies, advanced deepwater drilling methods, and spill response technolo- gy and plans, among other things. It would also coordinate training of industry crews and foster better communication between industry, academics, environmental groups and govern- ment, the Interior Department said.
