French union threatens to take over refinery

London-French trade union CGT warned February 3 that it would take over the Dunkirk refinery if owner Total does not restart it by February 15."After this date the employees will take control of the refinery and its management," the union said in a statement.The CGT will also ask a trade union meeting scheduled for February 5 to call for a 48-hour strike in support of restarting the refinery, it said. Workers at the Dunkirk refinery in northern France have been on strike since mid-January over the uncertain future of the 140,000 b/d site, a CGT source said. A Total spokesman declined to comment on the union's ultimatum.
