US renewable fuel standard brings muted opposition

Washington-While opposition has surfaced to the renewable fuel standard issued February 3 by the US Environmental Protection Agency, there may be just enough benefit for key constituencies to dampen any serious effort to scuttle it.The new standards, called RFS2, were a huge boost to corn growers and backers of corn-based ethanol. The EPA backed off of an earlier aggressive stance that would have used a controversial scientific method to conclude that corn ethanol did not reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% relative to gasoline.
