London-Pressure on Iran’s oil and gas sector intensified this week as the EU and Canada joined the US in imposing sanctions aimed at cutting off international investment in the Islamic Republic’s main economic lifeline. The new EU sanctions, approved by European leaders in June and by foreign ministers July 26, came into force July 27 and were immediately welcomed by senior US officials. Iran, though, again dismissed the sanctions, with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad saying Iran would “overcome all problems.”
