Jakarta-Indonesia plans to seek up to $5 billion in compensation from Thailand state oil and gas company PTT Exploration and Production’s Australian subsidiary over last year’s spill at the Montara exploration well in the Timor Sea, Indonesian Transport Minister Freddy Numberi said July 23. “It is true that we will demand compensation, as much as possible, maybe $5 billion,” Numberi told reporters after a meeting with Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. He said the spill had caused pollution in waters near Indonesia’s Rote Island in East Nusa Tenggara and destroyed the livelihoods of local fishermen.
