New oil spill consortium takes shape in Gulf of Mexico

Houston-A couple of dozen Gulf of Mexico independent operators have quietly formed a consortium in recent months with oil services provider Helix Energy Solutions Group to assure quick emergency access to the same containment equipment used in the Macondo oil spill. The group, which has no formal name and is not yet legally incorporated, differs significantly from the Marine Well Contain- ment Company (MWCC) whose major oil company members said in July they would fund the manufacture of a $1 billion Gulf spill containment system, Stephen Powers, Helix director of finance and investor rela- tions, told Platts.
