US wants idle Gulf infrastructure removed

Washington-The US Department of the Interior on September 15 ordered oil and gas companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico to draft plans for dismantling about 650 unused production platforms and setting permanent plugs in about 3,500 nonproducing wells. Companies have 120 days to submit their plans, which must include specific dates for the submission of related permits and for starting and completing the decommissioning work on the so-called “idle iron,” or wells, platforms and pipelines no longer producing oil and gas or serving exploration purposes.
