Tokyo-State-owned Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation bought 100,000 kiloliters (629,0000 barrels) of Saudi Extra Light crude from Japanese refiner Showa Shell for the country's strategic petroleum reserve, JOGMEC said September 16. This was Japan's first crude purchase for its SPR since December 2006, when it bought 46,000 kl, and is part of the government's broader plan to replace the reserve's heavy crudes with lighter grades.
