Melbourne, Australia-The energy intensity of the Australian economy fell by an average 1.2% annually for 18 years to 2008, putting the country on track to meet a 25% reduction target from 2005 levels by 2030, a government research bureau survey said September 29. The survey by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics-Bureau of Rural Sciences tracked the national economy's energy intensity from the fiscal year ended June 30, 1990, to the year ended June 30, 2008. In the study, ABARE-BRS defined energy intensity as the ratio of energy consumption to economic output, and attributed the decline to both shifts in the structure of the country's economy towards less energy-intensive sectors and improvements in energy efficiency.
