Russia urges speedy work on Caspian oil, gas field

Moscow-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has instructed the country’s Natural Resources Minister Yuri Trutnev to accelerate talks with Kazakhstan regarding the joint development of the Khvalynskoye oil and gas field in the Caspian Sea, a Kremlin statement said late September 7. The comments came after Medvedev and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev attended a forum on cooperation between Russia and the central Asian country, including in the energy sector. Development of the Khvalynskoye field was discussed among other issues, the Kremlin said. The two countries are to develop the field under a production sharing agreement first expected to be signed in early 2006, but which has since been repeatedly postponed.
