Reports fault US handling of Macondo spill

Washington-Confusion, miscommunication and rivalries among federal and local officials hampered efforts to contain the BP Macondo oil spill in the first few weeks after the blowout, according to four new reports released October 6 by the National Oil Spill Commission. Inaccurate initial estimates of the flow of oil also undermined public confidence in the government’s efforts to fight the spill, which in turn prompted the Obama administration to deploy resources based on political considerations, the reports conclude.
