London-The UK's natural gas-focused BG Group July 29 reported lower second quarter earnings in line with market expectations, but said it would likely miss its 2009 production target due to weak gas demand in its key markets. BG said second quarter net earnings fell to GBP513 million ($844 million), against GBP747 million in the year-earlier period, reflecting sharply lower gas prices. Excluding one-off items, BG's "clean" net income of GBP507 million beat consensus estimates by about 2%, supported by a sector-leading 7% year-on-year rise in production volumes in the quarter at 643,000 b/d of oil equivalent.
