Court settles Romania-Ukraine offshore spat

London-The International Court of Justice in the Hague said late February 3 it has drawn a new boundary in the Black Sea between Ukraine and Romania, freeing up the disputed area for oil and gas exploration. The dispute over the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones between the two countries dates back to 1997, and centered on the maritime boundary around Serpents’ Island off the Romania/Ukraine coastline. The new boundary is technically equidistant from both coastlines.
