Brussels-Three international banks have agreed to consider loans totaling up to $1.7 billion to Ukraine to reform its gas sector and pay its Russian gas bills in an EU-brokered deal, the European Commission said in a joint statement with the banks late July 31. The three banks-the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank and the European Investment Bank- have agreed to work together to develop "a sustainable solution to Ukraine's medium-term gas transit and gas payment obligations."
