Vancouver—The Canadian province of Alberta is investing C$495 million (US$470 million) in a ground-breaking carbon capture and storage (CCS) project that backers say could generate an extra 1 million b/d of new oil production and C$15 billion in royalties. After signing a letter of intent with North West Upgrading and Enhance Energy, Premier Ed Stelmach told reporters November 26 the C$600 million Alberta Carbon Trunk Line will be the largest CCS venture in the world and could make his province a global leader in developing the technology. “It will be useful in other jurisdictions around the world where emissions are higher than in Alberta,” he said.
