Europe restricts gas use, turns to storage, alternative pipeline routes

London-European countries January 7 began restricting industrial natural gas consumption and tapping gas storage facilities in response to the cutoff of deliveries of Russian gas via Ukraine. Some EU countries, notably Germany and Poland, were able to continue to receive gas via Belarus, but most of Europe had their supplies totally suspended because of the escalating dispute between Russia and Ukraine, which saw all European transit via Ukraine suspended early January 7 (see story, p 1).
