Oslo-Norway's oil industry is watching closely for the outcome of the country's parliamentary elections September 14, with the latest opinion polls suggesting a tight race. Oil and gas exploration issues have been at the fore in the election campaign, notably opening up of the highly sensitive areas around the Lofoten Islands which has divided opinion within both the government and the opposition. The areas off the Lofoten Islands could contain some 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent, enough to form a new core province for the country's oil companies.
