US EPA delays decision on ethanol blends

Washington-The US Environmental Protection Agency on December 1 said it will delay until mid-2010 a final decision on whether to approve the use of more ethanol in conventional vehicles and said only certain model years may get that approval. The decision is important to ethanol producers seeking to boost demand during the current downturn and it is considered a key way for the US to meet federal renewables targets while advanced biofuels struggle to hit commercial levels. However, there are concerns over possible engine and infrastructure failures and related liability.
