Alaska may hold 85.4 Tcf of gas from methane hydrates

Washington-Alaska's North Slope holds an estimated 85.4 Tcf of technically recoverable natural gas in the form of methane hydrates, the Interior Department and US Geological Survey said in a report released November 12. Methane hydrates will move "from the realm of science and speculation to the realm of the actual and the useful," Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said at a Washington news conference. "Hydrates have more potential for energy than all other fossil fuels combined. This is a huge source of untapped energy. You cannot overstate that. This can be a paradigm shift."
