Syria extends Total, Shell upstream licenses

Dubai-Syria has approved the extension of operating licenses for France's Total and Shell at blocks in the country by a further 10 years each, the country's oil minister Sufian Alao said November 23. Alao told Platts that extensions to Total's operating license in the Deir Ez Zour joint venture, which had been due to expire in 2011, and Shell's Al-Furat license, which expired early this year, have now been ratified. The extension of Total's agreement by the oil ministry in September this year, reinforces the French major's presence in the country through its Deir Ez Zor license, a 50-50 joint venture with the Syrian Petroleum Company. The license has been extended to 2021, Alao said.
