Cape Town, South Africa—Confusion continued January 14 over the cause of a Nigerian fuel tanker explosion January 11. Nigeria’s main rebel group in the southern oil hub of the country, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, reiterated January 14 that it was responsible for the explosion. “MEND reconfirms that the explo- sion which occurred on board the oil tanker vessel January 11 was detonated remotely from explosives planted in the ship by opera- tives of MEND,” it said in a statement.
