Australia's Santos in talks on Indonesian Banjarpanji well mud disaster settlement

Sydney-Australian exploration and production company Santos is in talks with Indonesia's Lapindo Brantas over a settlement of its liability for the Banjarpanji mud well in East Java, the company said December 10. Santos holds an 18% stake in the Brantas production sharing contract, where the Ban-jarpanji well has been spewing huge volumes of mud since May 2006. The mudflow has now covered an area of 1,800 hectares, and displaced tens of thousands of local residents.
