Ukraine mulls response to Gazprom threat

Kiev-Ukraine is mulling how to respond to a threat of a possible 122% hike in Russian imported gas prices from Gazprom next year, a senior official at Naftogaz Ukrayiny said November 21. Gazprom issued a statement late November 20 suggesting the price may be as high as $400/1,000 cubic meters, up from $179.50/1,000 cu m in 2008. "We're shocked," the official said. "There is no logical explanation. This price is nothing like what we have been so far talking about. We are currently considering how to respond." The comments came as Gazprom said it agreed to extend a contract for gas supplies to Slovakia until 2028.
