A panel of top oil company executives March 14 defended oil industry profits and mergers,while a panel of state attorneys general and antitrust attorneys said the mergers have led to higher prices and that industry needs to be reined in.ConocoPhillips CEO James Mulva told the Senate Judiciary Committee the company's mergers and acquisitions were"necessary"to allow it to"compete more effectively by achieving the scale to undertake additional capital-intensive long term projects."
