Russia-Ukraine gas dispute underpins petroleum futures

New York-New York Mercantile Exchange February crude futures jumped 2.47 to settle at 48.81/barrel January 5,led by a continued strengthening in middle distillates triggered by the ongoing natural gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine.ICE front-month gasoil traded as much as 68.25/mt higher to an intra-day high of 496/mt,and settled up 51 at 478.75/mt.
