EPA denies California,New York,Connecticut oxygenate waivers

Washington-The US Environmental Protection Agency June 2 told California,New York and Connecticut,three highly populated states that have banned the gasoline additive MTBE,they must continue to use oxygenates in reformulated gasoline.The states had asked for waivers from the Clean Air Act requirement that RFG contain an oxygenate,arguing they could meet federal air standards without the 2% oxygen-content requirement.Having banned oxygenate MTBE,the states had to rely on ethanol to meet the standard.Fears of shortages and price spikes due to a reliance on ethanol after the January 2004 MTBE bans failed to materialize.
