Tyco Telecommunications has won a contract from Alaska Communications Systems Group to construct a submarine fibre optic cable between Anchorage, Alaska, and Florence, Oregon. The total cost of the system (undersea and terrestrial segments) will be 95 million US dollars. The undersea portion will have 4 fibre pairs with ultimate capacity to transmit 64 10 Gbit/s wavelengths on each pair. NEC has been awarded a contract from GCI to supply the major elements of the southeast Alaska submarine cable system (1,200 km in length), reported in the last issue. The contract includes equipment to upgrade the Alaska United West submarine cable system.
