Additional Undersea Cables Targeting Developing Markets Announced

We have commented on undersea cable activity in previous issues of the Monitor with many of these cables targeting emerging economies. Yet another system called “The BRICs Cable” has been announced. According to an interview in Techcentral, a South African online publication (www.techcentral.co.za), conducted with Andrew Mthembu, the US$1.5 billion system will feature terminuses in Vladivostok, Russia and Jacksonville, FL in the US. The system reportedly is in advanced planning and should be ready in the last half of 2014. Additional landing stations will be in China, Singapore with a spur to India, Mauritius, Cape Town, and Fortaleza, Brazil. The 35,000 km BRICs system will operate at 1.28 Tbps featuring two-fibre-pairs, operating 320 channels at 100Gbps.
