Verizon plans to spend about 3 billion dollars to reach New York City's 3.1 million homes and apartments, concentrating first on areas that have more single-family homes and cables above ground. By the end of the year, about 90 percent of homes on Staten Island will have access to Verizon's network. In time, the goal is to wire the city's biggest apartment buildings so that Verizon can reach many customers at a time. Alcatel will start deploying a submarine cable network in Seward, southern Alaska, for Kodiak Kenai Cable Co. The project will serve 60,000 residents and will stretch more than 900 km.
