After a relatively weak end to 2005,with fibre shipments in Q4 05 down on Q3 05, there was a marked increase in activity in Ql 06. We estimate that world fibre production in Ql 06 was 21.3 million fibre-km, up 12 percent on Q4 05 and up 15 percent on Ql 05. Fibre production in Q1 06 was thus significantly higher than even the strongest quarter of 2005 (Q3: 19.7 million fibre-km). As a result of more detailed analysis for CRU's Worldwide Telecom Cable Market Report, we have made a small adjustment to our assessment of 2005 total fibre production: 75.7 million fibre-km, 150,000 fibre-km higher than in the last issue of this monitor.
