Furukawa Industrial, the Brazilian unit of Furukawa Electric, had sales of 275mR dollars (120m US dollars) in 2005, up 14 percent compared to 250m R dollars in 2004. The company saw a recovery in the fibre optic cable market in Brazil, which had a positive impact on sales. In Japan Hitachi Cable and Corning Cable Systems announced that they have agreed to transfer and consolidate their domestic optical fibre cable and optical wiring equipment business to a joint venture company, Advanced Cable Systems. Hitachi Cable and Corning Cable established Advanced Cable Systems in 2002.
