Italy has approved a power decree, aimed at encouraging Alcoa to maintain operations at its Italian smelters. Following an announcement in November that it would temporarily idle its two Italian smelters, Alco reached a temporary agreement in February to keep the smelters operational for six months. Under the new power decree, power lines connecting mainland Italy with Sardinia and Sicily would be upgraded while discounts on power supplies would be given to industrial consumers on condition they agree to temporary interruption of supplies. The government, Alcoa and other parties involved are due to meet in April this year to evaluate the situation.
