In this spotlight, we focus on the 90 smelter projects that are listed in our forthcoming Long-Term Outlook for Aluminium 2010 edition as being either completed between 2005 and 2010, under construction, probable or possible. Projects under construction have a combined capacity of 8.644m tpy, with a further 7m tpy of projects deemed to be probable. Most projects under construction are located in China, which is not surprising given how quickly Chinese smelters have been to react, both to the economic downturn and to the pickup in demand.
